The Experience

Before You Go

Bring 2–3 liters of water

High-country sun and scrambling sections make hydration essential—carry a refillable bottle or bladder and sip regularly.

Wear sturdy shoes with traction

Trails include exposed granite and short scrambles—trail runners or hiking boots with good grip reduce slipping risk.

Dress in layers for altitude swings

Temperatures can shift quickly between shaded grove and exposed overlooks; a lightweight insulating layer and wind shell help.

Respect cliff edges and fissures

Taft Point’s fissures and Glacier Point edges are dramatic but dangerous—keep back from the brink and supervise kids closely.

Local Knowledge

Hidden Gems

  • Washburn Point—fewer crowds than Glacier Point and excellent framing of Yosemite Valley
  • Quiet stretches on the Mariposa Grove loop away from the parking area where old-growth sequoias feel more solitary

Wildlife

  • Mule deer
  • Steller's jay (and occasional black bears in lower elevations)

Conservation Note

Stick to established trails, pack out all trash, and follow park guidance on food storage—visitor impact and wildfire risk are the park’s top conservation concerns.

The valley and surrounding high country were home to the Ahwahnechee and Southern Miwok peoples long before Yosemite became a national park; late-19th-century conservation efforts by naturalists secured many of the protections visitors enjoy today.
