The Experience

Before You Go

Hydrate early and often

Carry at least 1L for short hikes and 2–3L for longer 5–6 hour options; refill opportunities don’t exist in the park.

Protect against sun and heat

Bring a wide-brim hat, high SPF sunscreen and lip balm — summer temperatures often exceed 100°F and shade is limited.

Footwear matters

Wear sturdy, closed-toe hiking shoes with good traction for slickrock and loose scree sections.

Choose your time wisely

Book morning or late-afternoon departures in summer to avoid the hottest hours; spring and fall are ideal for full-day hikes.

Local Knowledge

Hidden Gems

  • Small alcoves off White Domes with micro-sandstone formations
  • Less-trafficked vantage points east of Rainbow Vista for panoramic Lake Mead views

Wildlife

  • Desert bighorn sheep
  • Collared lizard

Conservation Note

Trail erosion and graffiti are main threats; stay on designated paths, pack out trash, and avoid touching cultural sites to preserve them.

The park’s Aztec Sandstone formed from Jurassic sand dunes; prehistoric peoples left petroglyphs and the area has been protected as Nevada’s oldest state park since 1935.
