The Experience

Before You Go

Bring layered clothing

Temperature swings in the valley can be dramatic—mornings can be freezing while afternoons warm quickly; pack a light insulated jacket and wind shell.

Use provided optics and add your own

The operator supplies binoculars and spotting scopes, but a camera with a 200mm+ lens or your own binoculars improves distant wildlife viewing.

Maintain wildlife distances

Always follow your guide’s instructions—stay inside the vehicle where directed and keep at least 100 yards from bears and wolves and 25 yards from other animals.

Hydrate and fuel for a long day

This is a 12-hour excursion with short walking stops—bring a refillable water bottle and eat the included lunch to keep energy steady.

Local Knowledge

Hidden Gems

  • Look for quiet pullouts along the Lamar River where otters and trumpeter swans sometimes appear early in the season
  • Drive the short gravel approach to Slough Creek at dawn—views often include wolves hunting in the meadows

Wildlife

  • Bison
  • Gray wolf

Conservation Note

Yellowstone is actively managed to balance wildlife conservation and visitation—stay on designated roads, obey closures, and pack out all waste to reduce human impact.

The Roosevelt Arch at Yellowstone’s north entrance was built in 1903 and symbolizes the early 20th-century movement to protect public lands; the Lamar Valley’s grasslands were shaped by Pleistocene glaciers and modern rivers.
