Railroad Tunnel Trail Mountain Bike Tour to Hoover Dam from Las Vegas

Railroad Tunnel Trail Mountain Bike Tour to Hoover Dam from Las Vegas

The Experience

Before You Go

Hydrate beyond the bottle

Bring a 1–2L hydration pack in addition to the provided bottled water—desert heat and sustained effort deplete electrolytes fast.

Sun protection is nonnegotiable

Wide‑brim hat for breaks, high SPF lotion, and UV sunglasses will keep your skin and eyes safe on exposed sections.

Headlamp or front light for tunnels

Some tunnel sections can be dim or shadowy; a small helmet or bike light improves visibility and lets you see rock or puddles.

Wear grippy closed‑toe shoes

Trails include packed dirt and short rocky pitches—flat pedal shoes or trail runners with good tread will keep you secure.

Local Knowledge

Hidden Gems

  • Hemenway Park bighorn sheep viewing area for quiet wildlife sightings
  • A less‑visited overlook on the River Mountains Loop with unobstructed views of the western bend of Lake Mead

Wildlife

  • Desert bighorn sheep
  • Peregrine falcon

Conservation Note

Lake Mead’s fluctuating levels are a visible sign of regional water stress—respect posted closures, pack out waste, and stay on designated trails to protect fragile desert crust.

The railroad grade and tunnels were carved to support Hoover Dam construction in the 1930s; the path you ride repurposes that industrial corridor into recreation.
