The Experience

Before You Go

Dress in layers for rapid temperature swings

Mornings can be well below freezing even in summer; wool base layers, an insulated jacket, and a windproof shell keep you comfortable during long roadside watches.

Bring a small tripod or beanbag

The tour supplies high-end scopes but a steady platform helps sharp telephoto shots and steady video through binoculars or lenses.

Purchase or bring a park pass

Park entrance fees are not included; have your America the Beautiful pass or purchase at the gate to avoid delays.

Start early for the best wildlife activity

Opt for the earliest pickup available — predators and ungulates are most active at dawn and dusk, increasing sighting odds.

Local Knowledge

Hidden Gems

  • Soda Butte Creek pullouts for quiet elk and osprey viewing
  • Mammoth Hot Springs boardwalks at the end of the day for vivid terraces and steam-lit photos

Wildlife

  • Gray wolves
  • Bison

Conservation Note

The northern range relies on visitor respect and seasonal protections; stay on pullouts and boardwalks, pack out trash, and follow guides’ instructions to minimize disturbance to wildlife.

Yellowstone was established as the world’s first national park in 1872; the northern range later became central to predator-prey restoration, including the reintroduction of wolves in the 1990s.

Common Questions

Are wolf sightings guaranteed?

No safari can guarantee a specific sighting; however, the northern range has consistently higher wolf activity and the guide’s experience and scopes significantly improve your chances.

Is the tour suitable for children?

Yes — the tour is family-friendly with stroller-accessible stops and short hikes; small children should be supervised and dressed for cold mornings.

Do I need to bring food or drinks?

Lunch, snacks, bottled water, and hot coffee/cocoa are provided; guests can bring personal snacks or alcoholic beverages for the picnic (NPS rules apply to consumption).

What about park entrance fees and passes?

Entrance fees are not included. Bring an annual National Park Pass or pay at the gate; commercial vehicle discounts may apply if you have proof of prior entry.

Can I use a tripod or monopod for photography?

Yes — tripods and beanbags are allowed and recommended for stabilizing long lenses, though be mindful of other guests at crowded pullouts.
