The Experience

Before You Go

Layer for altitude changes

Temperatures can swing from humid sea level to cool summit mist—bring a light waterproof jacket and a warm midlayer.

Sturdy footwear

Trails include boardwalks and jagged lava surfaces—closed-toe hiking shoes with good tread are best.

Hydrate and snack

You’ll be in the van between stops; carry at least 1 liter of water and use provided snacks to maintain energy for short walks.

Respect cultural sites

Follow guide directions at wahi kapu and do not remove rocks or artifacts—this preserves both culture and ecology.

Local Knowledge

Hidden Gems

  • Devastation Trail viewpoint for recent lava landscapes
  • A roadside farm stand near Keaʻau for fresh tropical fruit and local crafts

Wildlife

  • Hawaiian green sea turtle (on certain beaches)
  • Native birdlife such as ʻamakihi and ʻapapane in forested areas

Conservation Note

Stay on marked trails, don’t remove lava rock or sand, and follow park rules—these actions protect fragile soils and cultural sites and support ongoing research and restoration.

The park protects active volcanoes that formed the island; sites here are important in Native Hawaiian history and folklore, including stories of Pele.

Common Questions

Where does the tour start and end?

Pickups are from Hilo port (cruise ship) or Hilo hotels; end locations are the same to ensure return to ship on time. Airport pickup (ITO) is not available, but drop-off can be arranged.

Is park entrance included?

Yes — the tour includes entrance to Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park.

Will we definitely see lava?

No—lava visibility depends on current volcanic activity and conditions. Guides will take you to the best viewpoints available that day, but eruptions are unpredictable.

Can children ride on the tour?

Yes; Hawaii law requires children under 8 to use proper child seats. The operator provides booster seats for children 5 and older if arranged in advance.

How much walking is involved?

Expect short walks from 10–45 minutes at various stops; most time is in the vehicle. Surfaces range from paved boardwalks to uneven lava rock.

Can I request specific stops?

Yes — this is a private tour and the route is customizable. Depending on timing you can usually fit 1–2 optional stops like Punaluʻu Beach or Volcano Winery.
