The Experience

Before You Go

Waterproof everything

Fiordland rains on a schedule of its own—use a rain cover for your pack and a waterproof jacket to stay comfortable.

Strong footwear

Choose stiff-soled hiking boots with good grip; the track is rocky and muddy in places.

Bring at least 2–3L of water

The route is strenuous and there are no reliable potable sources en route—carry enough for the full day.

Protect camera gear

Mist and spray from waterfalls can find lenses—use dry bags or zip-locks for electronics.

Local Knowledge

Hidden Gems

  • Southern shore of Lake Marian has quieter vantage points for reflections and alpine flowers
  • Short walks in the Hollyford Valley (e.g., Bridal Veil Falls viewpoints) if the summit corrie is closed

Wildlife

  • kea (alpine parrot)
  • tūī and bellbird in the beech forest

Conservation Note

Fiordland is a protected national park—stay on the track, pack out all waste, and avoid feeding wildlife to reduce human-bird conflicts.

The valley lies within Te Wāhipounamu, an area long traversed by Māori for pounamu routes; European access increased with the development of the Milford Road in the 20th century.
