The Experience

Before You Go

Obey crocodile warnings

Many iconic waterholes close during the wet season and warning signs indicate where swimming is prohibited — never enter the water where signs or guides advise against it.

Timing for hikes

Start walks in the cooler morning hours to avoid peak sun and to catch active wildlife; plan for heat by carrying 2–3 L of water per person for longer treks.

Respect cultural protocols

Listen to Traditional Owner briefings, don't photograph restricted sites, and follow your guide’s instructions on access to Arnhem Land areas.

Footwear and footing

Expect boulder fields, loose rock and slippery pools — sturdy trail shoes with good grip are preferable to sandals.

Local Knowledge

Hidden Gems

  • Sunrise on the Gunlom pool rim for panoramic views with fewer crowds
  • Bowali or local cultural centres for context on rock art and management practices

Wildlife

  • Saltwater crocodile (Crocodylus porosus)
  • White-bellied sea eagle and various wetland waders

Conservation Note

Visitor numbers and access are regulated in sensitive zones; follow Leave No Trace, avoid taking rock art souvenirs and support local-guided experiences that fund land management.

Kakadu and Arnhem Land have been continuously occupied for over 40,000 years, with rock art and songlines preserving ancestral knowledge; many sites are still managed by Traditional Owner clans.

What to Bring

Sturdy trail shoesEssential

Provides traction on boulder fields and uneven trails at Jim Jim, Gunlom and Nitmiluk.

Sun protection (hat, SPF 50 sunscreen)Essential

Top End sun is intense; long exposure on escarpments and riverbanks increases UV risk.

Quick-dry swimwear and towelEssential

Useful for swims in Maguk, Gunlom or Edith Falls when waterholes are open and safe.

Insect repellent and lightweight long sleevesEssential

Mosquitoes can be heavy in the wet season; long sleeves help reduce bites in the evenings.

Common Questions

Do I need a permit to visit Arnhem Land?

Access to some Arnhem Land sites is restricted and managed by Traditional Owners; your operator secures permissions for included visits, so follow their guidance and any cultural rules.

Are the waterfalls safe to swim in?

Many pools are safe in the dry season (May–October) but closures occur due to crocodile risk, especially in the wet season — heed park signage and guide advice at all times.

How remote is this trip and where do we sleep?

The tour uses permanent, powered tents with shared facilities at camp locations; some sections are remote but the operator provides basic powered camping and meals as listed.

What level of fitness is required?

A moderate level of fitness is needed for short hikes, boulder scrambling and occasional steep climbs; you don’t need technical climbing skills but should be steady on uneven terrain.

What should I know about weather and seasons?

The Top End has a wet season (Nov–Apr) with heavy rains and road closures, and a dry season (May–Oct) with cooler nights and full access — plan accordingly for heat and potential closures.

Is the trip family-friendly?

The tour suits active families with older children who can manage walks and heat; safety rules around crocodiles make supervision essential for younger kids.
