The Experience

Before You Go

Dress in layers

Temperatures on the water can drop quickly—bring a waterproof shell, insulating mid-layer, and hat.

Bring binoculars

A 7–10x pair will help you pick out seals on skerries and birds on distant cliffs.

Prepare for motion

If you get seasick, take medication before boarding and choose a seat near the center of the boat for less roll.

Arrive early to check in

Be at the Kenai Fjords Tours office at least 45 minutes before departure to exchange your voucher and complete the waiver.

Local Knowledge

Hidden Gems

  • Thumb Cove waterfall approach—quiet and photogenic along the fjord
  • The Caines Head viewpoint (from shore hikes) offers alternate vistas of Resurrection Bay

Wildlife

  • Steller sea lions
  • Harbor seals

Conservation Note

Glaciers in the region are retreating; operators follow strict wildlife viewing distances and emphasize Leave No Trace practices to limit disturbance.

Seward became a rail terminus in the early 1900s and is the gateway to Kenai Fjords National Park, which preserves the Harding Icefield and its glacier system.
