The Experience

Before You Go

Dress in layers for cold spray

Temperatures at lake level can be several degrees cooler than nearby roads; quick-dry base layers and a windproof shell will keep you comfortable when spray and wind pick up.

Bring a dry bag for electronics

Steam and spray are constant; keep cameras and phones in a sealed dry bag and consider a floating strap for extra security.

Arrive early for calmer water

Mornings on Yellowstone Lake are usually smoother and offer better wildlife viewing and photography conditions.

Follow guide instructions around geothermal features

Stay within approach distances outlined by your guide — undersurface thermal vents and unstable ground make these areas hazardous.

Local Knowledge

Hidden Gems

  • Quiet coves on the southern stretch where shorelines funnel migrating waterfowl
  • Small bubbling vents visible from a short paddle east of the marina that produce steam in cool mornings

Wildlife

  • Common loon
  • River otter (and occasional elk near shoreline)

Conservation Note

Stick to designated approach distances and never step onto thermal ground; staying in small guided groups helps minimize shoreline impact and protects fragile thermal features.

The lake occupies part of the Yellowstone Caldera and has been a travel and fishing area for native peoples long before it became the nation’s first national park in 1872.

Common Questions

Do I need prior kayaking experience?

No — guides provide basic instruction and the route is chosen for safety; however a moderate fitness level helps you enjoy the full three hours.

Are children allowed?

Yes — children 12 and under must ride in a tandem kayak with an adult; operators commonly carry kids as young as five.

What happens in bad weather?

Trips can be canceled for thunderstorms, high winds, or unsafe conditions; the operator will notify you and refund if canceled at least 24 hours prior.

Will we see geothermal features from the water?

Yes — the shoreline has on-land and near-shore thermal features, and guides point out areas where vents affect the lake surface.

Is the launch wheelchair accessible?

Grant Village marina and boat ramp are wheelchair accessible for shore approach, but assistance may be required to board kayaks.

What should I bring for food and water?

Bring at least 1–2 liters of water per person, snacks for energy, and a refillable bottle stored in a dry bag or secure compartment.
