Goblin Valley Canyoneering Adventure: Rappel into the Goblin’s Lair in Utah
Rappel into the Goblin’s Lair on a guided 4-hour canyoneering trip through Goblin Valley State Park. Short technical rappels, sunlit slots and otherworldly hoodoos combine geology, hands-on ropework, and big desert views.
The Experience
Before You Go
Arrive early to get fitted
Check in 15 minutes before departure—guides need time to fit harnesses, run safety briefings, and issue gear.
Morning light is best
Book a morning slot for cooler temperatures and dramatic sunbeams through the skylights inside the slot canyon.
Footwear matters
Wear grippy, closed-toe hiking shoes or approach shoes—sandstone can be slick on slopes and during rappels.
Watch the weather
Avoid canyoneering during summer storms—flash floods can make slots hazardous even miles upstream.
Local Knowledge
Hidden Gems
- •Climb a low goblin for a quieter panoramic view away from the main trailhead
- •Shortside slot just east of the visitor center offers intimate light shafts late morning
Wildlife
- •Desert cottontail rabbit
- •Common raven
Conservation Note
Stick to established routes and avoid chipping or climbing fragile hoodoos—sandstone erodes easily and human impact accelerates deterioration.
The park’s sandstone formed in the Jurassic; early Native American groups and later Mormon settlers used the surrounding plateaus for travel and seasonal hunting.
Photographer's Notes
- • Edge of the Goblin Valley floor looking across the hoodoos
- • Inside the Chamber of the Basilisk where skylights create vertical shafts
- • Rim above the slot for views toward Robbers Roost
