The Experience

Before You Go

Respect the current

The Colorado River in the narrows runs swift in places—stay alert, trim your boat, and follow guide instructions for eddy turns and ferrying across flows.

Protect from the sun

Sun reflects off canyon walls and water; wear a wide-brim hat, long-sleeve sun shirt, and SPF 30+ sunscreen applied to all exposed skin.

Footwear for shore hikes

Bring sturdy water shoes that can handle slippery rock and hot sand—you'll get out for short hikes and beach breaks.

Pack light and secure valuables

A 13-liter dry bag is provided; keep phones and cameras in it and stow snacks and spare layers inside to keep hands free for paddling.

Local Knowledge

Hidden Gems

  • Small petroglyph alcoves above the usual beach level (accessible during low water)
  • A quiet swim spot inside a side cove where the water warms on calm afternoons

Wildlife

  • Desert bighorn sheep
  • Peregrine falcon

Conservation Note

Visitors should avoid touching petroglyphs, pack out all trash, and stay on sand beaches to protect fragile riparian plants and archaeological sites.

The Black Canyon was carved by the Colorado River cutting through volcanic bedrock; the area contains petroglyphs and was used by Mojave and Southern Paiute peoples for centuries.

Can I bring a phone or camera?

Yes—keep electronics in the provided 13-liter dry bag for shore stops; use a waterproof case for on-water photos.
