The Experience

Before You Go

Arrive early and light

Check in 30 minutes before departure to sign waivers and attend the safety briefing; leave bright clothing and phone flashes stowed to protect the glow.

Know the weight limit

Kayaks are tandem and strictly capped per-person (weighing on-site); guests over the limit will not be allowed to participate—plan accordingly.

Bring a change of clothes

You will get wet—pack dry clothes and a towel for the drive back to your hotel.

Choose the earlier tour if new to kayaking

Sunset departures give daylight to practice paddling in the mangrove canals before full darkness increases difficulty.

Local Knowledge

Hidden Gems

  • Early-sunset paddle through the inner mangrove channels for birdwatching before the glow appears
  • Short walk to Las Croabas boardwalk at dusk for shoreline views and local food kiosks

Wildlife

  • Great egret and night-herons
  • Mangrove crabs and small estuarine fish

Conservation Note

Guests are asked to avoid lotions and bright lights and to follow guides’ directions so the bay’s delicate organisms and mangrove habitat remain undisturbed.

Local guides and marine biologists converted early fishing knowledge into conservation-focused tours; Laguna Grande has long been a site of scientific study on bioluminescent ecosystems.

Photographer's Notes

Best times:Sunset (practice paddling), Blue hour (transition), After dark (photographing bioluminescent streaks with long exposures)
Key viewpoints:
  • Mangrove canal entrance where reflections double the light
  • Open edge of the lagoon for wider shots of paddles and glow
  • Close to your kayak’s wake to capture bioluminescent streaks
Subjects to capture:Bioluminescent wakes and splashes, Mangrove silhouettes and reflections, Night-sky with paddlers in silhouette

Dry bag for phone and valuablesEssential

Keeps electronics and clothes safe from splashes and accidental capsizes.

Quick-dry change of clothes and towelEssential

Essential after the tour—saltwater-soaked clothing is uncomfortable in the car ride back.

Common Questions

How old do kids have to be to join?

Minimum age is 6 years; all minors must be accompanied by an adult and able to paddle and enter/exit the kayak independently.

What if the bioluminescence is faint or absent?

Bioluminescence is natural and variable; the company cannot guarantee intensity, and refunds are not given if the glow is weak—guides will still provide interpretation and a nighttime kayak experience.

Can pregnant people participate?

No—pregnant guests are not allowed to participate for safety reasons.

Is transportation provided from San Juan?

Transport may be available but is not guaranteed; contact the operator in advance to arrange private transfer for an extra fee.

What about weight limits?

Kayaks use a strict per-person weight limit and guests will be weighed on-site; those exceeding the limit cannot participate and no refunds are issued.

Will the tour be canceled for rain?

Tours generally run in light rain; severe weather or unsafe sea conditions may cancel the trip, in which case the operator will notify you and offer a refund per their policy.
