The Experience

Before You Go

Bring plenty of water

Temperatures rise fast and shade is scarce—carry at least 1 liter per hour per person and an emergency water bottle in the vehicle.

Wear eye protection

The Slingshot is open-air; goggles or wraparound sunglasses cut wind and dust glare for safer driving and clearer photos.

Plan stops, not speed

Roadside pulls give the best views and protect fragile surfaces—obey posted speed limits and use designated turnouts.

Protect petroglyphs and soils

Stay on trails and avoid touching rock art; cryptobiotic soils are fragile—walk only on hardened paths.

Local Knowledge

Hidden Gems

  • Atlatl Rock petroglyph panel (short stair access)
  • Seven Sisters beehive-shaped sandstone cluster off a minor pullout

Wildlife

  • Desert bighorn sheep
  • Greater roadrunner

Conservation Note

Stay on marked trails to protect fragile rock varnish and cryptobiotic soil; pack out all trash and minimize idling to reduce emissions in the park.

Valley of Fire’s red Navajo sandstone formed from ancient dunes roughly 150 million years ago; Indigenous petroglyphs indicate long-term human presence in the valley.

Hydration is essential in the desert—carry more than you think you'll need for stops and short hikes.

Short walks over sandstone require grippy, protected footwear.

Common Questions

Do I need a special license to drive the Polaris Slingshot?

You need a valid driver’s license and must be at least 21 to rent and operate the Slingshot.

Are helmets required for passengers?

Helmets are not typically required but the vehicle operator may recommend or provide helmets—check with the rental operator before your tour.

How far is Valley of Fire from Las Vegas?

Valley of Fire State Park is about a 45–60 minute drive northeast of the Las Vegas Strip, roughly 50 miles depending on your start point.

Can I stop and hike during the self-guided tour?

Yes—there are multiple short trails and pullouts; plan for 15–60 minute stops to explore places like Fire Wave and Atlatl Rock.

Is the park pet-friendly?

Pets are allowed in parking areas and along the scenic drive but must be leashed and are restricted from most trails and buildings—check park rules before arrival.
