The Experience

Before You Go

Layer for changing weather

Temperatures swing quickly near the Alaska Range; bring a windproof shell and thermal mid-layer to stay comfortable on exposed ridgelines.

Secure small items

Use sealed pockets or a small dry bag — cameras and phones can be splashed or dust-coated on open sections of trail.

Ride within limits

Machines reach 20–25 mph; if you are new to ATVs, keep speeds low and follow your guide’s line to avoid rutted or wet sections.

Hydrate and eat before riding

The meal stop is generous, but initial adrenaline can suppress hunger — bring a water bottle and a small snack for the trail.

Local Knowledge

Hidden Gems

  • Old prospector cabin remains spotted along back roads near the trailhead

  • Arctic fox

Conservation Note

Riders are encouraged to stay on designated tracks to protect fragile tundra; operators follow leave-no-trace practices and limit group sizes to reduce impact.

The Healy valley developed through mining and homesteading in the early 20th century; trails here often follow old resource roads repurposed for recreation.
