The Experience

Before You Go

Beat the heat window

Depart before sunrise November–March for soft light; in summer, an early start is essential to avoid hazardous midday temperatures.

Artist Drive is one-way

This scenic loop runs south-to-north and is limited to vehicles under 25 feet. Ask your guide to time the loop for best color at Artist’s Palette.

Footwear matters on salt

Wear closed-toe shoes with firm soles—the salt crust is sharp and uneven at Badwater and Devil’s Golf Course.

Hydration and electrolytes

Carry at least 3 liters of water per person in warm months and supplement with electrolytes to avoid heat illness.

Local Knowledge

Hidden Gems

  • Harmony Borax Works ruins near Furnace Creek for a quick history walk
  • Salt Creek Boardwalk (seasonal flow) to spot rare Death Valley pupfish

Wildlife

  • Coyotes at dawn along the valley floor
  • Roadrunners darting between creosote and mesquite

Conservation Note

Stay on durable surfaces in the badlands and avoid stepping on fragile salt crusts and cryptobiotic soils. Pack out all trash and never drive off-pavement unless on designated roads.

Twenty Mule Team Canyon recalls the late-1800s borax era, when long wagon trains hauled mineral through brutal heat. The Timbisha Shoshone maintain deep cultural ties to this landscape and its scarce water sources.

Desert sun is intense year-round, especially in summer; shade your face and eyes to reduce heat fatigue.

Lightweight Long-Sleeve UPF LayerEssential

Breathable coverage protects skin from sun and wind while keeping you cooler than bare skin.

Closed-Toe Hiking ShoesEssential

Firm soles improve traction on gravel, badland overlooks, and sharp salt crust at Badwater.
