The Experience

Before You Go

Arrive early to check in

Plan to be at Rowes Wharf 20–30 minutes before departure to pick up boarding passes and avoid last-minute lines.

Dress in layers and bring a windproof layer

Open decks are exposed; a warm shell or fleece will keep you comfortable during top-deck viewing.

Pack motion-sickness remedies

Bring over-the-counter medication or acupressure bands if you’re prone to seasickness—harbor wakes can be unpredictable.

Charge your camera and phone

Top-deck light and island passes offer prime photo ops—extra battery or a small power bank will keep you shooting.

Local Knowledge

Hidden Gems

  • Spectacle Island summit loop for a compact skyline-and-forest view
  • Peddocks Island ruins and tidal beach—easy to spot from the water and worth a return visit by ferry

Wildlife

  • Harbor seals hauled on rocky ledges
  • Ospreys and terns fishing over the shallows

Conservation Note

Boston Harbor has undergone major cleanup since the late 20th century; visitors are asked to respect protected areas and bird nesting seasons to support ongoing restoration efforts.

The Harbor Islands played roles in defense, quarantine, and maritime industry from colonial times through World War II; many islands still show military foundations and historic structures.
