Beyond Anchorage: Wilderness, Wildlife & Portage Glacier Experience
Leave the city for spruce-scented valleys, rehabilitated brown bears and the ice-scored walls of Portage Glacier. This flexible six-hour tour mixes wildlife viewing, glacier viewpoints and a summer-only cruise upgrade to get you up close to Alaska’s living ice.
The Experience
Before You Go
Dress in layers
Temperatures can swing quickly—bring a windproof outer layer and a warm mid-layer even on sunny days.
Bring binoculars
Wildlife at the conservation center and along the shorelines is best viewed with optics to avoid disturbing animals.
Plan for photography
If you upgrade to the glacier cruise, bring a short tripod or steadying strap for calmer shutter speeds on boat decks.
Arrive early to meet point
Meet at Dena'ina Convention Center 10 minutes before departure; there is no regular hotel pickup during spring–fall.
