The Experience

Before You Go

Wear traction-ready boots

Even with supplied crampons, waterproof boots with good ankle support make Johnston Canyon and snow-swept paths far safer and more comfortable.

Layer for temperature swings

Morning drives and canyon shade can be much colder than sunny lake stops—bring a warm midlayer and a windproof shell.

Carry a small daypack

Pack water, snacks, camera, and identification—parking isn’t provided at the meeting point and stops are brief.

Be wildlife-wise

Keep distance from elk and bighorn sheep; do not feed animals and follow guide instructions during roadside sightings.

Conservation Note

Banff National Park manages visitor access to protect wildlife corridors and sensitive spring habitats; follow Leave No Trace principles and obey Parks Canada regulations.
