The Experience
Before You Go
Pack layers for elevation swings
Temperatures vary drastically—mornings are cold at 7,000+ ft while afternoons can warm; bring a fleece and a waterproof shell.
Early starts for wildlife
Plan to be at prime viewing areas at dawn or dusk—animals are most active then and crowds are lighter.
Respect thermal areas
Stay on boardwalks and follow ranger instructions around hot springs and geysers to avoid unstable ground and severe burns.
Bring binoculars and snacks
Binoculars are provided but a personal pair plus high-energy snacks keep you comfortable during long drives and quick roadside stops.
