The Experience

Before You Go

Hydration is non-negotiable

Carry at least 2–3 litres per day; humidity and sun make dehydration sneaky—refill at accommodations and lunch stops.

Wear grippy footwear

Choose shoes with good traction for short rocky scrambles at Ubirr and Burrungkuy; sandals are not recommended.

Respect cultural sites

Do not touch rock art, follow guide instructions, and avoid photographing restricted images—ask if unsure.

Crocodile awareness

Obey all signs and guide instructions around waterways—never enter unsupervised water or approach river edges.

Local Knowledge

Hidden Gems

  • Anbangbang Billabong—quiet birdwatching close to Burrungkuy
  • Marrawuddi Arts—meet local artists and learn about Arnhem Land techniques

Wildlife

  • Saltwater crocodile (estuarine)
  • Red-tailed black cockatoo

Conservation Note

Kakadu operates under joint management with Traditional Owners; visitors should follow closures and stick to marked paths to reduce erosion and cultural site damage.

The Arnhem Land sandstone formation and floodplain ecology shaped local Indigenous lifeways; many rock art panels here date back tens of thousands of years and map ancestral narratives.
