The Experience

Before You Go

Dress in layered waterproofs

Coastal wind and sudden rain are common—waterproof outer layers and insulating mid-layers keep you comfortable during walks and evening aurora hunts.

Expect several short hikes

Walks are generally under two hours but can be on uneven lava rock and pebble beaches; wear sturdy walking shoes with good grip.

Northern Lights aren’t guaranteed

Aurora sightings depend on clear skies and solar activity—the guide will attempt hunts if forecasts look promising but plan with flexible expectations.

Bring cash or card for lunches and extras

Villages along the route have limited options and optional extras like Vatnshellir caving or Krauma baths may require payment on site.

Local Knowledge

Hidden Gems

  • Búðir black church on a lava plain for stark coastal photos
  • Ytri-Tunga beach for seal watching off-season from the shoreline

Wildlife

  • Harbor seals along sheltered bays
  • Seabird colonies including fulmars and, in season, puffins

Conservation Note

The lava fields’ moss and soil are fragile—stay on marked trails, pack out waste, and avoid walking on vegetation to preserve regrowth.

Reykholt and surrounding West Iceland are tied to the Saga Age; Snorri Sturluson’s medieval seat and geothermal settlements shaped regional culture for centuries.
